Government Civil Hospital: Chinese Wardmaster, Fong Bing, previously Chinese wardmaster in the Lunatic Asylum at $408 was transferred to the Government Civil Hospital on the recommendation of the Acting Principal Medical Officer at the increased salary of $480 to $600 by $24 a year. Mong Hing is senior Chinese wardmaster and has had 14 years service; he has at his own expense learnt to read and write English and is very highly spoken of by Dr. Bell.
Additional Nurse at $144. On the 30th May 1901 the Acting Principal Civil Medical Officer reported that the existing staff of nurses was only just sufficient to meet requirements and that if one fell ill or extra help were required in a serious case, there would be great inconvenience. Accordingly another nurse was engaged at $12 a month, and will in ordinary times do work among the private patients who nearly always require extra attention.
Civil Linen Coolie. The Acting Principal Medical Officer reported on the 18th December 1900 in reference to the washing of the Government Civil Hospital which it was decided should be done at the Gaol after the 1st January 1901, that it would be necessary to engage a coolie at $9 a month in connection with this change. The salary has this year been paid out of the Vote of $500 for washing and has now been inserted in the Estimate.
Lunatic Asylum. On the recommendation of the Acting Principal Civil Medical Officer the post of Assistant Wardmaster at $720 has been abolished, and on the transference of Wong Hing, the Chinese Wardmaster to the Government Civil Hospital, Tong Po was appointed to replace him at the reduced salary of $240 to $408 by $24 yearly.
